Jim Donohue, San Francisco Bay Area Web Designer and principal for Donohue Design
In 1992, Jim Donohue came to the San Francisco Bay Area looking for adventure and a break from dreary Irish weather. A web designer now, Jim started his California career as a publication designer. At Mac Home Journal he quickly rose to art director, a fast-moving, high-pressure position that taught him how to manage complex projects and strict deadlines.
A telecommunications engineer in his first profession, Jim naturally gravitated to web design in the mid-90s. He has developed strong web-based marketing skills and keeps up on best practices in website and email design. As an expert at integrated marketing, Jim enjoys the challenges and rewards of applying his crisp, corporate design across print and web media for a powerful, cohesive brand image.
Jim serves leading Bay Area technology clients, including Apple, Trend Micro, SuccessFactors and HP, as well as Silicon Valley startups and progressive regional companies. He also works on contract for agencies such as Publicis Modem/Dialog, Carlson Marketing, Providian Financial and Agency.com.
Jim entered the graphic design field when he realized he could make a living doing what he loves. “My favorite part of the process is collaborating with a client’s team to translate their marketing message into a strong metaphor, a recognizable visual voice,” he says. As a student of human behavior, Jim draws on his psychology knowledge to create more effective marketing pieces. And because he finds that communication skills are vital to creating successful projects, he has also studied Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).
Creative inspiration comes easily when Jim makes time for meditation or spending time in nature. “I do my best work when I can move away from the computer screen and clear my head,” Jim says. He’s grateful he can put his Springer Spaniel on a leash, and in five minutes, be walking on one of the nearby Marin hiking trails. “It’s paradise and I can’t imagine living anywhere but the Bay Area. But,” he admits, “I still listen to the BBC for familiar accents and English bands.”
Although their US adventure wasn’t meant to be permanent, 17 years later, Jim and his family are still here. He lives with his wife and son in San Anselmo. When he’s not busy with website design or spending time with his family, Jim likes to sketch, watch sci-fi movies, swim and explore new hiking spots.
